#AmericanIdiot20 Release?

Recently on Green Day's social media accounts they announced a special edition of their major label debut, Dookie, for its 30th anniversary. It contains the original album, plus demos and live songs that were unreleased.

But not only is 2024 Dookie's 30th anniversary but it is also the 20th anniversary of American Idiot. (Gosh I feel old for saying that...) It makes me wonder if Green Day will do something for American Idiot, which I really hope they do.

Please let #AmericanIdiot20 happen!

11/12/2023 Update: This month Green Day announced a world tour to promote their upcoming new album Saviors next year. And the tour is also celebrating the 30th and 20th anniversaries of Dookie and American Idiot. At least Green Day is celebrating the latter album's anniversary but I hope a reissue will come out at some point.

Don't Wanna Be An American Idiot

Happy Fourth. A quick discussion on this post, but the third verse from "American Idiot" rings so true of what's been going on in the US in recent years.

"Don't wanna be an American idiot
One nation controlled by the media
Information age of hysteria
It's calling out to idiot America"

The Search for My Favorite Green Day Photo

Last November I posted about my favorite Green Day picture of all time but this time I want to talk about it again, and here is a story I want to share.

Between 2007 and 2008 I remember going on Photobucket to look at and save pictures of Green Day and Billie Joe on the computer. One day in '08 I found a small GIF that showed four pictures of Billie Joe, and the fourth picture was this:

I thought he looked so handsome and I wanted to find the full photo of it since it was cropped on the GIF. But unfortunately I didn't have any luck finding the photo. I really wanted it so bad.

In 2012 I made a Twitter account and sometime in 2013 I started looking at Green Day pictures that were posted by the fan accounts. I was hoping they would post that photo but they didn't. I was disappointed but I kept searching for it.

Then in the Spring of 2014 I was looking at the Green Day pictures on Twitter and I came across a tweet from a fan account. The account posted a picture and wrote, "Their eyes..." I opened up the tweet and it showed this photo.

I couldn't believe my eyes. I had found it at last, after six years of searching! I was so happy I actually cried happy tears, and I saved the photo. But later I found a better quality version of this picture on the Green Day Authority website.

In 2017 I made my own calendar on Shutterfly and I added a lot of Green Day pictures on it. For one of the months I added this photo, and when I was done using the calendar I cut it out along with the rest of the pictures and put it in a frame. I would love to have another copy of this photo because I love it so much. <3

God's Favorite Band

A week ago I got Green Day's latest compilation album released back in 2017. This is their second greatest hits album (the first being 2001's International Superhits!) and it's funny because before when God's Favorite Band came out I wondered if there would be a International Superhits part 2, because Green Day had released so many songs since the mid 2000s.

God's Favorite Band has songs from 1991's Kerplunk! to 2016's Revolution Radio, plus a different version of "Ordinary World" (featuring country singer Miranda Lambert) and a new song that's exclusive to the album called "Back In The USA".

I'm glad Green Day came out with this greatest hits album because it has "American Idiot", "Holiday", "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams", and "Wake Me Up When September Ends" on it. I really like the artwork on the front and back of the CD where it shows the references to the albums.

I got another copy of this CD for my mom as a (early) Mother's Day present and she loves it.

The cover art is based on this photo of the band.

Green Day Cake

Want to show you this blast from the past but here's a picture of a cake for my 14th birthday from a long time ago. It's the heart grenade with Billie Joe's name on it. <3 I remember I was so excited when I first saw my cake. The cake was strawberry flavored.

Two American Idiot Songs Played

About a month ago I got hired at a Walmart to do overnight stocking, and ever since I've been working there the music would be on all the time, non-stop. Walmart has their own radio station called Walmart Radio and sometimes they would play songs I like (I heard Green Day's song "She" being played twice) but mostly it's just ones I'm not into. But a few nights ago something very cool happened and I thought I would talk about it. While I was working a song came on and I noticed it was a Green Day song but I couldn't recognize which song it was. But as I payed attention to it more my jaw dropped. They were playing "Give Me Novacaine"!!!! It made me so happy (especially since it's one of my all-time favorite Green Day songs), and I was surprised they played that song even though it's not a single. Then as "Give Me Novacaine" was starting to end I thought a different song would play, but it actually went straight to "She's A Rebel"!! That was a great surprise, and hearing those two songs totally made my night!

Green Day Charms

If you grew up in the 2000s then you probably remember those silver Italian charm bracelets. They're bracelets that you can add/form with many different types of charms, and they could be about your favorite things, foods, drinks, and hobbies. They're made from Italy and I remember they used to be sold at the mall. During that time my mom, my two aunts, and my grandmother had them and I eventually got my own when I was 13. I still have my bracelet and the charms I have are two sushi ones, a heart that says "Niece" (given to me by one of my aunts), a cola bottle, a cat one, music notes (because I love music), one that has hearts, aces, spades, and clubs (I love playing card games), one that says "Sweet 16" (I got it on my 16th birthday), and one of Santa Claus (because I love Christmas).

I also have charms that are custom made by people and I have ones of Green Day. Here are two that are on my bracelet. Sorry if the pictures are kind of dark.

And here are these other ones that are not on my bracelet. Unfortunately the pictures of Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool came off of their charms...

I have two other ones that aren't in this picture but they're from the Nimrod and 21st Century Breakdown eras.

Green Day Folder

I got this folder in 2006 and it's mostly in a rough shape after having it for so many years. I still use it though to keep my Green Day pictures in.

Green Day Pins/Badges

Here are pictures of my collection of Green Day badges.

These are official pins which came in a package and I got them in 2005.

I also got this badge in '05 and it's an official one. The front of it is made of a soft material.

These badges are custom made and I got them in 2009.

And here are these badges of Billie Joe which are custom made also. I have other Green Day/Billie Joe badges too but I'm only showing these ones that have pictures/designs from the American Idiot era.

Alternative Press Segment #2

Here is the second segment from the same issue of Alternative Press (October 2004) and the topic is about the Green Day copycat bands who were around at the time and how Green Day felt about them. Written by Tom Lanham.

When They Come Around (Again)

Rob Cavallo is the first to point out the obvious. All you have to do is switch on MTV, VH1 or any allegedly alternative radio station, and you'll witness echo after Green Day echo. So many, in fact, that it seems almost criminal. "Just look at all those copycat soundalikes out there," the producer growls. "You can't point to one—at least in the modern era—that actually came before Green Day." But how do the boys feel about such blatant plagiarism? They weigh in on the issue:

[Tré] Cool: "My thing about that is, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. But these bands might need time. When we were doing Dookie, that's what we sounded like. So you've gotta give [the new bands] a chance to develop."

[Mike] Dirnt: "I'll give you a good example. I think the new New Found Glory single is a really good song. It's a poppy melody, but they're actually saying something. And myself, I really love the Dickies, but I discovered 'em—believe it or not—after we recorded Dookie. And when we finally met 'em, they naturally assumed that we knew their band, but I was like, 'Dude, I was too poor to buy records!' But they were probably thinking, 'Hey, those guys totally ripped off our songs!' But actually, I was probably ripping off Crimpshrine more than anyone. Them, and the Replacements and Hüsker Dü."

[Billie Joe] Armstrong: "Well, the thing about the pop punk bands is, there are so many, and they're all getting signed to major deals right from the beginning, with no time to develop their craft. So they have a bit of a formula before they even develop a formula. I don't like baggin' on the pop punk bands, though; I know what it's like to be on the receiving end, where people were slagging me off.
"So, what I've decided is that these bands need time to develop, so let's see what happens to 'em five, six years down the line. In 2009, a band like Good Charlotte isn't gonna be the same Good Charlotte that they were in 2003. And it's not up to me whether or not they last; it's gonna be up to what kind of music ends up coming out of 'em. They say all the right things, and it seems like their heart's in the right place. But it all depends on if they've got the talent and that ability to just say, '[__] it! I'm gonna do whatever I want!'" [TL]

Alternative Press Segment #1

This segment was in the October 2004 issue of Alternative Press. This was part of the main interview I posted a while back but it was featured on the side. There's also another segment which I will post later. The first one is about something Tré Cool did at a hotel where Green Day were staying during the recording sessions for American Idiot. Written by Tom Lanham.

The Time Of Their Lives

"We wanna grow older and we wanna be men and we wanna do it in style," asserts Mike Dirnt. "We don't wanna have to be bratty punk rock kids for the rest of our lives."
Fortunately, Green Day's metamorphosis into maturity isn't taking place overnight. Lest you think punk's most playful pranksters have gotten, y'know, boring, we offer this little run down of some of their recent feather-ruffling shenanigans which occurred at the Hollywood hotel where they'd been staying during the five-month American Idiot sessions.
Although he's the breadwinning father of two, Billie Joe Armstrong readily admits that, "My life feels really split down the middle lately, because there's this other side of me that's like this raging lunatic. So it's been hard to balance the two at the same time. So, all the trouble usually happens out of Tré's hotel room, and about 80 percent of the time, I'm there in the room with him. I'm no longer the instigator."
What kind of trouble? There was the evening when the drummer of a respected British band was occupying the suite next door to Cool. The snooty arteest wanted to sleep; Cool and his kooky minions wanted to party. Suffice it to say, it didn't turn into the meeting of percussive minds you'd expect. The enraged guest burst into Cool's room (the door being regularly left ajar to keep the parties flowing) and yelled, "Turn down the music! I've got a gig tomorrow!"
"So I hear from hotel security the next day that one of this band's guys got locked in his room during the night," cackles Dirnt. "Somebody apparently tied a rope around his door handle, then tied it to a nearby handrail." How could someone perform such a trick? Cool's eyes are already twinkling. "See, you just do a slipknot on the doorknob," he explains. "Then you pull it really tight against the handrail, and do a good sailing knot. I've got a boat and stuff, so I'd know to tie a knot like that really good."
"And you can come back a year later and know that knot's still gonna be there," praises Dirnt. "So, this famous guy got locked in his room, and then he had to endure having his own music intentionally blared at the party next door."
Dirnt has also taken in his fair share of decadent hotel life. "It was 2:30 in the morning the other night," he wistfully recalls. "And this gal comes in from next door, and she looks just like the gal from The Bourne Identity and Run, Lola, Run. I'd swear it actually was her. She was in boxer shorts and a T-shirt, and she comes in and says, 'Could you please quiet down? I've really gotta get some sleep!' So I went back in and said, 'Okay, guys, you're gonna have to quiet down, or the really hot girl from next door is gonna come over and complain again!'"
Cool, who hadn't heard this story yet, then pounds knuckles with his partner in prankster crime. "I like the way you operate, my man! Nice one!" [TL]
